The differential rotation of ε Eri from MOST data

چکیده
From high-precision MOST photometry spanning 35 days the existence of two spots rotating with slightly differing periods is confirmed. From the marginal probability distribution of the derived differential rotation parameter k its expectation value as well as confidence limits are computed directly from the data. The result depends on the assumed range in inclination i, not on the shape of the prior distributions. Two cases have been considered: (a) The priors for angles, inclination i of the star and spot latitudes β1,2, are assumed to be constant over i, β1, and β2. (b) The priors are assumed to be constant over cos i, sin β1, and sin β2. In both cases the full range of inclination is considered: 0 ≤ i ≤ 90. Scalefree parameters, i. e. periods and spot areas (in case of small spots) are taken logarithmically. Irrespective of the shape of the prior, k is restricted to 0.03 ≤ k ≤ 0.10 (one-σ limits). The inclination i of the star is photometrically ill-defined.

We present time-series Doppler images of the rapidly-rotating active binary star EI Eri from spectroscopic observations collected during the MUSICOS multi-site campaign in 1998, since the critical rotation period of 1.947 days makes it impossible to obtain time-resolved images from a single site. From the surface reconstructions a weak solar-type differential rotation, as well as a tiny polewar...
متن کاملDifferential Rotation of Eridani Detected by Most
The Microvariability and Oscillations of STars (MOST ) photometric satellite observed three rotations of Eri continuously in late 2005. We detected two spots ( m 0:01) at different latitudes (20N0, 31N5) revolving with different periods (11.35 days, 11.55 days), from which we derive a differential rotation coefficient, k 1⁄4 0:11þ:03 :02, in agreement with the prediction by Brown and coworkers ...
متن کاملThe Differential Rotation of Κ Ceti as Observed by Most – Ii
We first reported evidence for differential rotation of κ Ceti in Paper I. In this paper we demonstrate that the differential rotation pattern closely matches that for the Sun. This result is based on additional MOST (Microvariability & Oscillations of STars) observations in 2004 and 2005, to complement the 2003 observations discussed in Paper I. Using StarSpotz, a program developed specificall...

Gravitational multipole moments of the Sun are still poorly known. Theoretically, the difficulty is mainly due to the differential rotation for which the velocity rate varies both on the surface and with the depth. From an observational point of view, the multipole moments cannot be directly measured. However, recent progresses have been made proving the existence of a strong radial different...
متن کاملA “v2-f Based” Macroscopic K-Ε Model for Turbulent Flow through Porous Media
In this paper a new macroscopic k-ε model is developed and validated for turbulent flow through porous media for a wide range of porosities. The morphology of porous media is simulated by a periodic array of square cylinders. In the first step, calculations based on microscopic v2 − f model are conducted using a Galerkin/Least-Squares finite element formulation, employing equalorder bilinear ve...
